Bunjilaka, the Aboriginal Centre at Melbourne Museum, is more than just an exhibition gallery - it is a living cultural centre for Victoria's Aboriginal community and all those wishing to learn more about Australia's Indigenous cultures.
Bunjilaka celebrates Aboriginal culture and philosophies, and explores contemporary issues, especially those facing Indigenous people of south-eastern Australia (known as Koorie people).
The centre comprises Wominjeka, the Aboriginal welcoming area, Jumbunna, the exhibition gallery housing Koorie Voices, Belonging to Country and Two Laws, Kalaya, a visually stunning performance space for dance, song and storytelling, Milarri, the Indigenous garden and Wilam liwik, the Elder's meeting room.
The entrance to Bunjilaka is framed by Wurreka, Judy Watson's 50 metre long zinc wall etching highlighting the distinctive nature of Aboriginal art and culture in south-east Australia.
Melbourne Museum's Aboriginal Centre, Bunjilaka is an excellent introduction to Australian Indigenous cultures. Developed in consultation with Victoria's Indigenous communities, Bunjilaka presents the story of Aboriginal people, their connection to the land and their systems of law and community.
